The Diva Reimagined: Nina Tribus on Empowered Extravagance
Nina Tribus is not just a singer; she is a storyteller; an enchanting and theatrical force of nature who fuses the drama of a baroque masterpiece with dark electronic beats. Rooted in the tradition of the great divas but unapologetically contemporary, Nina’s music intertwines her unparalleled vocals with opulent imagery and themes of empowerment. Whether she’s channelling the darker aesthetics of the dark feminine or dreaming of cinematic soundtracks, Nina's ballads are an invitation to embrace both elegance and audacity—and she’s only just getting started.

Izland Interview: Nina Tribus, Musical Artist
Your sound and visuals are a stunning fusion of opulence and modernity. How would you define your music?

Thank you! I like the way you described it… I would say my music is very vocally driven. I primarily consider myself a singer and therefore my voice very much takes centre stage. Sonically, I lean towards darker pop, which can be heard in the electronic production and beats, encompassing the modern part of my artistry. Equally, my music possesses a theatrical and cinematic flair with strings and other musical genres such as the tango or waltz. Those two genres certainly embody an opulence that I hope to bring to my art and performance.

Do you have any musical and stylistic influences? Where did it all begin for you?
Ever since I can remember I’ve always known I was destined to be a singer—which I suppose is a good and bad thing at the same time! I grew up listening to all the 90s divas, from Celine and Whitney to Lara Fabian and Barbra Streisand, as my mum would listen to them which really made me fall in love with their incredible voices and their singing—my musical influences certainly come from there. It’s all about the melody, the expression and the storytelling. Considering my upbringing I sometimes feel as if I were born in the wrong era of music, but I’m hoping that one day I’ll realise that I’m wrong about this… I also love theatre and the concept of finding yourself in different roles and characters and finding the motivations for their actions. This influences the subject matter of my music and the way I like to perform the songs I sing.

The themes in your music and visuals feel theatrical, almost cinematic. Have you ever considered crossing into other forms of storytelling, such as film or stage performance?
Definitely! As a kid I sang loads of musical theatre songs as well as Disney songs. They are truly the perfect blend of story, music and acting. I still love to sing all those songs to this day! I am very open to crossing into other forms of storytelling, as I enjoy acting and would love to play in a movie one day. I think that if I did not have the talent and love for music that I would be pursuing an acting career instead. So it is definitely one of my goals for the future.

Your music and the energy you evoke champions empowerment. What do you hope listeners take away from your songs and persona?

I’m so glad it does! My mars is in Leo, which is all about taking action through self empowerment and being the boss, so I myself like to listen to songs that give me that electrifying energy to get up and just do what I have to do. Every time I need extra energy or to convince myself that I can do something, I love to listen to songs that make me feel exactly that, no matter the genre… So I’m really glad that this energy of self-belief comes across as it is definitely a sensation I hope to evoke in my audience. Alongside that, I also love to incorporate dark feminine aesthetics with topics that would maybe suit a Disney villainess. In other words, if my music makes you feel like you can conquer the world, whether as a hero or a misunderstood villain, I’ve done my job right!
Looking to the future, what would your dream path or project look like? Anything we can look forward to as we grow with you?
That’s a difficult one, as you never really know where life can take you or what something might lead to. There’s so many dream projects I’d love to do, such as singing on a soundtrack for a major movie or opening for an established artist! For those that are more in my control, I definitely see myself releasing an album, as I feel it is such a milestone for any artist. I also have several new songs lined up ready to be released as well as a music video, so there’s a lot to look forward to, at least in the very near future.
